“A memory is a flame that outlives the fuel”

(after Paul Valéry)

Vera Michel-Lauwereyssens (°1956) studied at the Academy St. Lucas, Kapellen, Belgium.  She paints with oil on canvas and her subject is the human figure in everyday life,  with all its qualities and imperfections, passions and joy of living.  The images  stop  for a moment on the canvas.  But they are not frozen, far from it,  they are ready to continue with their story like in a movie that is put on “hold”.

Gradually she developed her own way of painting, using contrast between light and shadow, sharp and fuzzy, adding collage of paper, photos or drawings on the canvas and creating a mixture of past and present.    However, the real issue is the mere desire to paint:  nothing in particular to tell, to prove, to hide, to complain about.

Her paintings seem to carry us back to a world of family memories, trips,  glimpses,  encounters no matter where.  Everyone sees a memory somewhere that is somehow recognizable.
